The promise is seductive: tasks that once took days can now be done in minutes. But in our rush to adopt AI-powered coding assistants, I urge you to consider a critical question: are you gaining speed, or are you simply trading disciplined engineering for a future of chaos?
From my perspective, many organizations are unknowingly taking out a high-interest loan of technical debt, and the first repayment is due in your Quality Assurance department.
Imagine your company has a precise, master recipe for a critical product. In the past, when you wanted to make a small change—say, add 2% more of one ingredient—your team would do exactly that. The change was controlled, intentional, and testable.
Now, imagine telling a machine, "Make me the same recipe, but slightly different." The machine, having studied thousands of recipes, doesn't just make your small change. It creates an entirely new recipe from scratch that meets your request. It might be good, but the core chemistry is different.
This is what happens every time your teams use Generative AI to "fix" or "update" a piece of code. Because the AI is probabilistic, not deterministic, it introduces uncontrolled variance. It doesn't edit; it re-generates. That's why it is called Gen-AI.
This isn't a technical problem; it's a business risk that lands squarely on your desk. Here’s how:
1. The "Quick Fix" Becomes a Major Liability. In the past, a minor bug fix required targeted testing. Now, an AI-generated fix must be treated as a major release. The underlying logic could be subtly different, potentially impacting other functions in ways no one can predict. This means every "quick fix" now requires a full, time-consuming, and expensive regression test. Is that really faster?
2. The Audit Trail Evaporates. For any regulated or quality-certified (ISO) European business, audibility is non-negotiable. How do you explain a change to an auditor when the change was generated by a "black box"? When you can't prove why a specific code structure was chosen, you risk non-compliance.
3. The Hidden "Cost Transfer." The budget you think you're saving in development hours isn't a saving at all. It's a direct cost transfer to your testing and QA teams, who now face the impossible task of validating an unpredictable system. You are paying for speed upfront with the currency of future stability.

How are we strengthening our testing protocols to handle this new level of code variance?
How will we maintain a clear, auditable trail of changes when using generative tools?
What is our strategy for managing the technical debt and knowledge gaps these tools might create in our teams?
